Sheila: Perfume on a Pig

Episode Two of Top Chef has come and gone and so I hope it's safe to blog about it. I have seen the wild reruns twice now, and I still cannot get over how aggressive the contestants are this season. That, and the new workout room! So, let's get started with the recap, speculation on Wylie Coyote's (Wylie Dufresne from WD50 in NY) judging, and further speculation on how Padma stays so svelte when there are plentiful shots of her chowing down. She even makes stuffing her face look beautiful.
The Plot: Episode Two focused on getting acquainted with Chicago landmarks. The chefs started with Quickfire at the Green City Market and had to use exactly five ingredients, not including salt, pepper, oil and butter. Spike was in "LaLa" land, communing with the locals and he totally blew his dish. Mark left an ingredient behind but pulled it off. And crazy, crazy Andrew (sous chef at Le Cirque, remarkably) used SIX elements. He was "disqualified" but did anyone else wonder why he did not get the boot at that point? The elimination took place at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Teams of three were formed and named for a specific zoo animal (lion, bears, penguins etc.) and they were responsible for catering three appetizers based on what their animal eats. A little complicated for my tastes. Valerie (dead on Rachel Dratch look-a-like) got eliminated for her tragic blinis.
The Point: Some chefs can't count. Who knew vultures eat Moroccan lamb? When you announce "game on," the game is usually off for you. Don't try to make blinis ahead of time. STAND BEHIND YOUR DISH. Tom is obviously getting facials on a regular basis; he looks great.
The Perks: The surprising low key judging by Wylie Coyote. Unbelievable takeaway lines like Andrew's manic response to how he was doing in the kitchen:"We're Sexy!" Stephanie uncharacteristically cursing about her homemade chips: "My chips are (bleeping) soggy as (bleep)." Gail's classic response to Nikki's stuffed mushrooms:"It looked like something a bear would produce, not eat!" And finally, Dale's mean spirited cut regarding said mushrooms:"At that point I was trying to put perfume on a pig."
The Pity: No Rocco. Molecular Gastronomy references. Cursing by women. Finally, if there was a show called Top Beauty, there would be no competition--Padma would win hands down.
What did y'all think? Any reactions to this week?

  • Hi Sheila

I'm glad you posted about Top Chef. I watched it, recorded AND took notes. Because of the volume of swearing the first week the swearing this week didn't bother me, had I had no reference point it might have.

Although I think they made the right elimination I was hoping beyond hope that Dale would be the one to bite the dust. I was even hoping that the third time I watched it!

Week two reminded me of some of the report cards that I used to get. The dreaded not working up to his ability - Erix. The charming- listens to the beat of a different drummer - Spike. The one I could never read all the way through - doesn't concentrate - Andrew.

Can hardley wait until next week.

    PS

About today's podcast. S.D. taking comedy lessons is like Wylie or Rocco taking cooking lessons.

  • Sheila,

I've never watched Top Chef before but I love the way you've summed things up so much that I'm tempted to tune it in some night. You are indeed a funny gal,(but you knew that already right?). Keep on making us laugh, we need it!

  • Sheila, I watched it again this week (last week I forgot it was on until I read your blog and then found it the next night repeated about 4 times and was able to watch the 1st week). I am so glad you blog about it because even though I was watching it, I caught more from reading your blog than I did watching it. Actually I was suposed to be working (I am a transcriptionist for a psychologist) and I was having to divide my brain to typing & listening to Top Chef. So your blog filled in my gaps! Thanks for your input. Just when I start to stray from you girls as far as listening to you faithfully like I did when you were live every day, you draw me back. I hadn't actually listened for a week or 2 and downloaded all the episodes from my itunes account onto my iPod and I have been listening for about 4 hours today. I was listening today while I was cleaning my house, with my $$$$$ Bose headphones and I was so hysterically laughing that my husband had to come in to see if I was OK. You were doing the Tips to Clip and talking about undies, marinara sauce, freezer undies and I was staggering around the house with my vacuum cleaner hose.....you drew me back in once again. I will most definitely keep up with the episodes! Happy Easter!!

  • Hi Sheila,

I have enjoyed Top Chef the past few seasons. I recently ate at a restaurant near where I live in Georgia called "Elevation"(it overlooks an airport). The chef there is Richard Blais, i.e. the "molecular gastronomer" on Top Chef. The food was very good. He is my pick to win. I have listened to your show on the radio and now get your podcasts. I recently found another podcast on itunes called "divacast" & downloaded it to listen to. All I will say is that they are a poor man's Satellite Sisters. They are wannabe, copycats, of your wonderful program. Keep up the great shows that you do!

  • I'm so happy Top Chef is back!
I totally agree with you that there's too much cursing; people who can't find any other words to use are unimaginative.
I like Mark the Aussie (or whatever he is).
Padma is so gorgeous! Can you beleive she was married to Salmin Rushdie?
I can't wait to see next week!
