Sarah: DWTS Re-Cap

Good morning from NYC.
Last night I had another partial viewing of DWTS, since my new fave show "New Amsterdam" aired in the second hour of competition. But the hour that I did watch was jam-packed.
First and foremost: I want to apologize to any Priscilla fans I may have upset with my comments on her face last week. I stand by my belief that women do themselves a disservice if they overdo the botox/plastic surgery and Priscilla, who is a beautiful woman, had such a lovely smile back in the days when she could move her mouth that I was sorry to see that smile gone. Having said that, she looked radiant last night and while her performance was not as strong as week 1, it still blew me away. Her face seemed more expressive last night, so perhaps part of the problem was nerves over her debut.
As for the others I saw:
Monica Seles, bless her competitive edge, still remains too stiff up top. And, as the judges pointed out, when she did hit the right steps she looked terrific but when she missed .... ouch! I think part of her problem is that she has very long legs and they get in the way sometimes. She is by no means ready to go home, though.
Penn Gillette, however, IS ready to go home. His particular brand of humor is just not DWTS-friendly (c'mon Penn ... a voodoo doll? That was embarrassing). I don't see him improving in coming weeks. His attitude is not conducive to commitment.
Steve Guttenberg was charming and had the best line of the night ("This show makes the world a better place"). I knew what he meant by that. He was referring to the fact that DWTS and shows like it are just plain fun and don't try to sell you anything or make you feel like you're less-than if you don't look like the contestants, since the contestants come in all shapes & sizes. Bottom line: we need to have more fun and stop taking ourselves so seriously all the time. If we did, the world would definitely be a better place. His partner, however, was a detriment to his score, I am afraid. What was with all the back-talk to the judges? I may be new to this show, but even I can see that the judges should not be heckled by the people they are critiquing. Bad, bad, bad, Steve Guttenberg's partner. And bravo to Steve for telling the judges that HE respects their opinions.
Shannon Elizabeth was gorgeous and very flexible and seemed to do a great job. My only question is: who the heck is Shannon Elizabeth? I am so woefully out of touch with the young'uns these days.
I DO know who the Jonas Bros are, being the auntie to a couple of 7-year girls, so I am not completely out of touch. Whether or not I will enjoy their performance tonight is another matter entirely, however. Keith Partridge still RAWKS.
Who do you think will be voted off tonight? Tell me your predictions! It will be a nail biter for sure (unless Penn gets the boot).
Comment me back, everyone!

  • It sounds like you need a TIVO in your life so you can see all of DWTS without missing other important shows! Doesn't Liz have an extra TIVO unit around. It is a life changing invention!!

  • Penn and sadly, Monica Seles are going home..

Next week, Adam Corrolla & the Hairspray girl.

  • Penn must be the one to go!

  • I think it will be Adam Corolla and Monica Seles.

Kristi Y. is on a roll.

Even Priscillal P. looked more comfortable. She even managed sort of a smile and her hair moved and looked more natural.

  • I love this show, almost as much as Steve G. I also think Penn and Monica will get the boot. You have to remember though that this is also a popoularity competition, which I guess explained why Billy Ray was on as long as he was....

  • I love Penn but I do think the typical DWTS viewer isn't going to be a fan of his humor. However, I do think he's trying and the judges were mean from him from moment one after his first dance, even before he started talking back. I met him twice, and both times he was incredibly charming and polite. So he got my 36 votes last night. I want to laugh with him one more week.

That said, Adam and Monica will most likely go tonight. Adam because he admits he's not trying, and Monica because she's trying hard, but not improving. Penn and Marissa can go next week. Marissa grates.

  • I hope Penn goes. He is creepy. I agree, his humor is not appropriate for DWTS.
I love watching Marlee dance!! Amazing.....and her partner is so good!

  • Definitely Monica should go, although I wouldn't be surprised if the Hairspray girl went because of the fan vote. Either Penn or Adam should go on the man side although fans could keep Adam around for awhile. I wouldn't be surprised to see Steve have to leave just based on fan votes.

  • Hi Sarah,
I haven't been watching DWTS, but New Amsterdam is also one of my new favorite shows. Glad to know you're watching as well!
    All the best,
    L.

  • I didn't read your previous comment about Priscilla, but I can't help but comment on her freaky mouth area every time I see her. Yes, she was so beautiful even the past few years, but, wow, she should have continued letting her good genes dictate her looks.
    Now, back to DWTS:
I love watching Marlee Matlin: what an incredible person to be able to learn this, and kudos to her partner for figuring out a way to effectively communicate on the dance floor!
BTW, Sarah: Shannon Elizabeth was in the first American Pie movie (I am embarrassed that I know that...NOT my demographic!)
